NME New Noise 2007

So the NME picked out 10 new bands set to rule over 2007. Lets see what we got then shall we?

We're using the tried and tested method of listening to the first song the band lists on their MySpace profile. Except for The View, where I'm just listening to Wasted Little DJ's because I adore it.

Band #1
The View
Song Judged: Wasted Little DJ's
Recommender: Mani (Primal Scream)
The View are a given when it comes to success. Chanting fans at gigs and armed with songs like this mean that they're set for big things.

Band #2
The Twang
Song Judged: Wide Awake
Recommender: Tom Smith (Editors)
From the first few seconds of the song I know we have something good here. A suitably twangy song which I reckon owes more to early U2 than anything else. Clearly a crew to watch.

Band #3
Blood Red Shoes
Song Judged: You Bring Me Down
Recommender: Paul Smith (Maximo Park)
Sharp, quick drumming and small bursts of guitar show off in the intro for this pairing. In all honesty its all a bit dull, until the chorus kicks in. The chorus and everything that follows is a big slap in the face and if they can put that all the way through a song they could have something special going on.

Band #4
Mumm-Ra
Song Judged: What Would Steve Do?
Recommender: Simon Rix (Kaiser Chiefs)
Oooh, shades of something familiar but I'm not sure what. That's a good thing. Its also not entirely clear what the songs about, again a very good thing given that most new bands lately sing about everyday life. Which is crap as we all know and don't need bands telling us what we know. Chirpy, plesant, undull. Very nice indeed.

Band #5
The Pigeon Detectives
Song Judged: I Found Out
Recommender: Nick Hodgson (Kaiser Chiefs)
Oh dear, threatening to be Wasted Little DJ's at the beginning but thankfully breaks away. This lot hail from the same New Yorkshire scene as the Kaiser Chiefs and The Cribs, they bear a lot more resemblance to the latter crew and with Jarman's crew having their second coming this year TPD have to pull out something better than this.

Band #6
Enter Shikari
Song Judged: Sorry, You're Not A Winner
Recommender: Daniel Carter (Radio 1 DJ)
OK think of Trivium, yes I know it hurts but try and pull in this abomination of musical sense for a second. Now think of that great chorus in their first single. Imagine if that singing went through an entire song. As well as having the best name of all 10 New Noise bands, Enter Shikari have the guitar venom of Slayer, the haunting vocals of Klaxons and a few effects that wouldn't look out of place on a Hot Chip album. I don't know about you but I'll take that cocktail anyday.

Band #7
Cold War Kids
Song Judged: Hang Me Up To Dry
Recommender: The House Of Lords (The Young Knives)
CWK rank among the few bands on the list I've heard before this little new music binge. Catching their video on MTV2 for We Used To Vacation was a good moment and so was another song I heard on Zane Lowe. This one is nothing like either. I've heard 3 of their songs and they all sound very different. The guitars are great, the drumming good enough to get me replicating it on my ever suffering legs and the vocals are tuneful. Bring on February.

Band #8
Tokyo Police Club
Song Judged: Nature Of The Experiment
Recommender: Russell Lissack (Bloc Party)
Now this is a tricky one, but they're Canadian and therefore get the benefit of the doubt. Nice jangly tune with guitar notes that sound more like bells than strings. Have a bit of the Ripchord about it I reckon and that is anything but a bad thing.

Band #9
Paramore
Song Judged: Emergency
Recommender: Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden)
Young, American and with this song line.
"So say love died/way too many times/when it deserved to be alive"
However, when it comes to emo there are definately a few levels of quality. Paramore occupy that no-nonsense, balls out (except for ball-less lead singer Hayley Williams) top level with a firey collection of 10 songs that form debut album 'All We Know Is Falling'. Excellent stuff, if not neccesarily new.

Band #10
The Enemy
Song Judged: Its Not OK To Be A Slave
Recommender: Serge Piozzorno (Kasabian)
Lyrically, this lot are the British Billy Talent, and vocallist Tom sounds unsettlingly like the Canadians. Signed to legendary punk label Stiff quickly and they do the legacy proud. Look for a rousing collection of songs when the album hits.

So 10 bands, 1 year. With plenty of veterans to go up against them the newbies are going to have their work cut out. I look forward to the results with relish.
