Review - The Outer Marker

Album Info Box
Artist - Just Jack

Album - The Outer Marker

Jack Allsopp is technically in the same boat as Jamie Treyore. A white rapper who has a way with tunes. Jack's tunes are purely synthetic though unlike the bassy throb of Jamie. If you've gotten to know Jack through his big shiny pop song Stars In Their Eyes then this, his first album will be a bit of a shock to your system.

The Outer Marker is a lot more sparse and thin than Overtones, this helps Jack's voice to come through much better and its a good voice. He has a confidence and tone that shows a rapper far more experienced than him. Its that maturity that makes The Outer Marker such a pleasure to listen to, but the stumbling block is the music itself. Often its far too much in the background and doesn't hold the same relevance to the lyrics of each track as Jamie's album.

The lyrics work as does Jack's voice, however all too often the music just seems like an afterthought. No doubt he's rectified that with his recent work, but as far as this album goes its just not good enough.

In One Line
He's got the lyrics and the skill, but doesn't have the tunes.
